ON THE DUARTE

By

RICK WHELAN

Between Mission San Gabriel

And San Bernardino,

Andres Avelino Duarte

Rode across the Rio Azusa

Stopping to water his horse

Along the west bank,

Gazing out over sloping foothills

Covered with huge oak trees…

This stretch of fertile land

Lush with green fields,

Brilliantly colored flowers

And golden sunshine

There truly is this magical place!

The story of his rancho Azusa de Duarte

Nestled beside the mountains

On the Duarte!

From a small adobe casa

Near Indian Springs,

Planting gardens and vineyards

Surrounded by animals grazing…

A small stream with yellow flakes

Brings a flood of gold hunters,

Fruitful pasturelands welcome

An era of rancheros…

Large herds of sheep, horses,

And a growing cattle empire.

Orchards of peaches, apricots, oranges

And golden sunshine…

There truly is this magical place!

The story of his spirit of adventure

Wild with mountain beauty –

On The Duarte!

A colony takes root,

The “Queen” of the foothills,

A flourishing citrus industry

With land booms and busts…

Sturdy people, generous, responsible,

Believing in tomorrow.

Celebrating their heritage,

Their City of Hope

Good hearts build a homestead

Shaping an emerging city,

This feeling of being

A community…

A pioneer family

Committed to health and education,

Self-reliant against adversity

With its future still unfolding

Duarteans are the living pageant

Of continuity with the past…

Souring blue skies

Dotted with evergreen pines,

Chaparral-covered hillsides

Climbing Fish Canyon Falls,

Orange-perfumed trails

And golden sunshine…

There truly is this magical place!

The story of one man’s family

Sharing his dream-

On the Duarte!
